How to Fix Scratches on a Car

If your vehicle has some minor scratches, you might be able to buff them out on your own. Here’s how to fix scratches on a car:

  • Candle Wax – For emergencies, you can use candle wax to seal the scratch. Clean the scratched surface before gently rubbing it with wax. Please note that this is not a permanent solution.
  • Super Glue – Super glue can also be used in a pinch to temporarily seal the scratched surface and slightly mask the damages.
  • Paint Polish or Rubbing Compound – Begin by using a light polish with a less abrasive foam pad to try buffing out the scratch in your car’s paint. If you still see scratches, you can move up to higher-grit polishes or compounds.
  • Wet Sandpaper – If polishing doesn’t remove the scratches, you can use a 2000-grit wet sandpaper. Once the scratches are barely visible, apply a rubbing compound, followed by finer and finer polishes. You’ll then need to apply a wax or paint sealant for protection.
  • Touch-Up Paint: If you need to hide deeper scratches, you can buy touch-up paint at your local service center.

Note: Be sure to wash your vehicle before taking on any scratch repairs, as this will remove any dust or dirt and make the damages more visible as you work on them.

How to Fix a Small Dent in Your Car

If you’re wondering how to fix a small dent in a car, there are multiple at-home methods you can try:

  • Plunger – Use a household plunger or car dent plunger to pop the dent out. This may take several tries.
  • Hammer or Mallet – Knock the spot back into place using a hammer for smaller dents and a mallet for larger dents. To prevent causing any further damage, use a towel or blanket to protect the side you are hammering.
  • Dent Puller – Using a dent puller requires a bit of experience. You’ll need to drill a hole in the dent, lace the wire through, and pull the dent back to level it out. Afterward, you’ll have to fill the hole, sand it down, and paint over it. That said, we don’t recommend using this method if you haven’t practiced it before.
