How to Prep Your Home for an EV

2020 GMC Hummer EV in a forest

There are plenty of benefits to driving an electric vehicle in Fairmont, but there is a little bit of prep required to get your home ready for an electric vehicle. When you purchase an electric vehicle, you’ll need to implement an electric vehicle home charger. While there are electric vehicle charging batteries stations in the Grafton area, you’ll probably use your home charger most often. Explore five easy steps that you can take to prepare your home for an electric vehicle like the new GMC Hummer EV!

1. Choose Your EV Charging Type

There are two types of electric vehicle home chargers that Grafton drivers can choose from:

  • Level 1 Electric Vehicle Home Charger: Takes multiple days of charging with a 120V home outlet.
  • Level 2 Electric Vehicle Home Charger: Takes several hours to fully charge an electric car. This is a popular option in Morgantown homes, and is a 240V+ charger.

2. Get Your Garage Ready

If it has been a while since you’ve cleaned out or organized your garage, now is the time to do so! Be sure to get your garage ready for an electric vehicle prior to delivery.

3. Assess Your Average Consumption

Every home has a power panel used to distribute electricity throughout the home, and it’s rated for a maximum current flow in Amperes. New homes typically come with a 100 Amp power panel, and you can confirm this by checking the amperage rating printed on your main circuit breaker. Perform a self-assessment on your electrical energy usage prior to installing your EV charging station at home.

4. Find Yourself an Electrician

You’ll want to hire an electrician to chat about concerns you may have about power consumption and electric vehicle charging. After researching and buying your home charger, they can install your plug or have it hardwired back to the power panel. This typically costs a couple hundred dollars, but could be up to $1,000 or $3,000 if it’s found that your power panel is not sufficient and requires upgrading.
