What Is GMC Super Cruise®?

GMC Super Cruise® is a proprietary technology that provides hands-free driver assistance for GMC vehicles. It works with OnStar® and LiDAR mapping to help ensure the vehicle travels safely under appropriate conditions on compatible roads in and around Fairmont.

Do you have questions about your OnStar® subscription, or are you curious about how LiDAR technology works in vehicles? Contact us, and speak with our experts today.

What Do I Need To Use GMC Super Cruise®?

GMC Super Cruise® relies on real-time data to provide precise positioning and map updates. This requires an active OnStar® Super Cruise® Plan. In addition, you’ll need to make sure that certain driver assistance features are either turned off or turned on and set to the appropriate settings:

  • Teen Driver (turned OFF)
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (turned ON)
  • Forward Collision System (turned ON and set to ALERT AND BRAKE)

Finally, carefully consider whether:

  • The vehicle is on a compatible road
  • The lane markings are clearly visible
  • The Driver Attention Camera is functioning correctly
  • Your cameras and radar systems are in good working order and functioning properly (not broken, covered, or obstructed)

How Do I Use GMC Super Cruise®?

Once all of the necessary conditions are met, perform the following three steps to start using GMC Super Cruise®:

  1. Turn on Adaptive Cruise Control.
  2. Once Super Cruise® detects that all of the necessary conditions are met, the Super Cruise® symbol turns white on the instrument cluster. Press the Super Cruise® button on your steering wheel when it is safe to do so.
  3. Once the Super Cruise® symbol and the steering wheel light bar turn green, you may remove your hands from the steering wheel. Green indicates that Super Cruise® is now steering your vehicle.

To turn Super Cruise® off, press the button again or take control of the steering wheel and press the brake pedal. You can also turn off Super Cruise® by deactivating Adaptive Cruise Control. If you have an EV, you can deactivate Super Cruise® by pulling the Regen On Demand Paddle toward you.

Blue Cruise® Vs. Super Cruise®: Which Is Better?

Blue Cruise® is a hands-free highway driving system from Ford that’s similar in concept to GMC Super Cruise®, but user testimonials suggest that GMC Super Cruise® is the overall better system. Unlike Ford Blue Cruise®, GMC Super Cruise®:

  • Has a larger mapped road network (750,000+ miles vs. 130,000 miles)
  • Enables hands-free driving while trailering with Super Cruise® trailering capability
  • Has a clear steering-wheel-mounted status light
  • Can perform automatic lane changes (unavailable for earlier versions of Blue Cruise®)
