Do Electric Cars Use Oil?

Adding oil to engine

Routine maintenance of your EV is important, but do electric cars use oil? Do electric cars need oil? The answer is quick and simple: no. Electric vehicles run off of an electric battery instead of a traditional gas engine. Enjoy not having to get an oil change in Fairmont ever again! Remember to still keep routine maintenance of your electric vehicle. We’ll give you more information about what fluids need to be changed every so often below!

What Fluids Do You Need to Change in Electric Vehicles?

As mentioned before, electric car oil changes don’t exist, but there are still some fluids in your EV that you need to change every so often. Contact our service department and schedule an appointment if you need any of the following fluids replaced:

  • Brake Fluid: Brake fluid keeps your brake system lubricated so that you can break properly in your EV when driving in Morgantown.
  • Transmission fluid: Your EV still has a transmission, so it’s important to change it as well. It ensures that the gears in the transmission move smoothly and efficiently.
  • Coolant: You don’t want your battery or overall vehicle overheating, especially in Grafton. Coolant keeps everything at reasonable temperatures.

Electric Vehicle Parts

Now that you know what fluids are in your EV, what else is in your vehicle? EVs are powered by an electric motor that converts an electrical current from your battery into motion. The most fundamental parts of your vehicle include:

  • Charging ports: These are the external chargers you use to charge the battery of your vehicle.
  • Traction motors: These motors turn your vehicle’s wheels.
  • Onboard charger: The charger converts the external charge you receive from a charging port into DC power.
  • DC-DC converter: This converts the high-voltage direct current (DC) power that comes from the battery into the low-voltage DC power that moves the vehicle.
  • Battery: Your battery stores the electricity that powers the motors as you drive.
  • Thermal system: This system keeps your motors and electronic components from overheating.
