Diesel vs. Gas Trucks Pros and Cons

Reasons to Choose a Diesel Truck

  • Torque & Towing – Diesel trucks are celebrated for their torque-forward performance, which contributes to higher towing capacities. This makes diesel trucks popular choices for work trucks and transport vehicles.
  • Fuel Economy – Diesel trucks are also more efficient on average than gas-powered models. Diesel trucks tend to get higher fuel economy figures, which means fewer stops on the road.
  • Longevity – Both anecdotal and scientific evidence suggests that diesel engines have a longer lifespan than traditional gas engines – and some models reach up to 500,000 miles! This is due to the simple construction and strong engine blocks of the diesel design.

Reasons to Choose a Gas Truck

  • Acceleration & Horsepower – While diesel engines may have greater torque, gas trucks tend to have higher horsepower and acceleration specs. This is particularly valuable for highway travels.
  • More Fueling Stations – Traditional gas-powered models can stop at any gas station to fuel up, while diesel trucks must search for diesel-specific gas stations. This means gas-powered cars can enjoy greater convenience while out and about.
  • Lower Maintenance Costs – Gas trucks use parts that are easy to source, which keeps maintenance costs down. Diesel truck parts are often harder to find – and therefore, more expensive.

Technical Comparison: Gas & Diesel Engines

Why are there so many differences between the gas vs. diesel truck design? Here are some of the similarities and differences that you’ll find under the hood:

  • Both gas and diesel engines feature internal combustion. This means the fuel converts to energy inside the engine itself, rather than outside.
  • Gas trucks compress air and fuel at a 10:1 ratio, while diesel trucks range from 15:1 and 25:1. This means diesel engines have much hotter cylinders, which is capable of igniting itself without the need for a spark plug.
  • Because diesel engines run so much hotter, they are also more efficient. Why? The efficiency of an engine is determined by the difference between its maximum hot and cold temperatures. Higher compression ratios tend to create more fuel-efficient engines, like the diesel.
